Here is a thought that sits quietly behind a lot of ordinary lives. You are born. You spend close to two decades being educated, often into debt before you have earned a single paycheck. You get a job to pay that debt off, while also trying to save for a house that costs more, relative to what you earn, than it did for the generation before you. You find a partner, you have kids, and you spend the next twenty years funding their education, which puts them on the exact same track you just finished. Somewhere in the middle of all that, you are supposed to also have a soul, a culture, a sense of adventure, and some creativity left over.
This piece is different from our usual explainers. It is an opinion, built on real research rather than a feeling, and we want to be upfront about that difference. We are not claiming there is a secret group of people running a conspiracy. We are asking a more useful question. If you look at the actual numbers behind debt, work, screens, and attention, does the shape of modern life look like something that was designed for your wellbeing, or something you are simply expected to survive?
The Loop Nobody Really Chose
Born. Educated, often at real financial cost. Employed, usually to pay off that cost. Housed, at a price that keeps climbing faster than wages. Partnered. Raising kids who are heading into the same loop. Retired, if the math works out. None of this is a plot by any one person or company. It is closer to a set of incentives that built up over decades, where each part of the system makes sense on its own, but the whole thing adds up to very little room left over for anything that is not directly tied to survival or productivity.
What the Debt Numbers Actually Say
Start with education, since that is where the loop usually begins. In the United States, total student loan debt reached roughly 1.835 trillion dollars by the end of 2025, spread across close to 46 million borrowers, with an average balance around 37,400 dollars per person. In a 2025 survey, 42 percent of federal student loan borrowers said they struggle to cover basic bills like food and housing because of that debt. Just over half of borrowers who are still renting said their student debt is a direct reason they have not bought a home yet.
That last point matters, because it shows the loop connecting itself in real time. Debt taken on to get a job delays the house that job was supposed to eventually afford. Meanwhile, the general relationship between wages and the cost of living has been widely documented as stretched for decades, with pay for most workers growing far more slowly than the cost of housing, education, and healthcare around them. None of this requires a conspiracy theory. It requires looking at what people actually owe and what they actually earn, and noticing the gap has not been closing.
Where the Time for Everything Else Actually Goes
Work and debt repayment account for a large share of adult hours, but they are not the only thing quietly eating the time that used to go toward culture, tradition, adventure, and simply making things. Multiple industry surveys over the past few years have placed average daily screen time somewhere in the range of six to seven hours for a typical adult, once phones, computers, and televisions are all counted together. That is not a single perfectly precise number, since methods vary between studies, but the general range shows up consistently enough to take seriously.
Six or seven hours a day is close to a second unpaid job. It is time that, a couple of generations ago, would have more often gone toward a hobby, a craft, a long conversation, a walk with no destination, or simply being bored long enough for a new idea to show up. None of this means screens are worthless. It means the hours have to come from somewhere, and for a lot of people, they are coming from exactly the parts of life this article opened with. Soul, culture, tradition, adventure, and creativity.
What Constant Screen Time Is Doing to Younger Minds
The most detailed research connecting screens to wellbeing has focused on teenagers, largely through the work of psychologist Jonathan Haidt at New York University. Haidt’s research points to a sharp rise in teen depression, anxiety, and self harm beginning around 2012, right as smartphones and social media became a normal, constant part of teenage social life. He describes this shift as one of the largest single drivers of the youth mental health crisis that followed.
The effect is not evenly spread. Reported increases in depression and anxiety among teenage girls have been three to four times larger than among teenage boys, with image heavy platforms drawing much of the concern. Some of Haidt’s research describes teen girls spending an average of around 20 hours a week on social media, which is close to a part time job of scrolling and posting layered on top of school.
It is worth being honest that this research is genuinely debated among academics. A widely discussed review in the journal Nature pushed back on Haidt’s conclusions, arguing that some of the alarm around screens and teen mental health has outpaced what the underlying data can fully prove, and that other factors, from the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis to broader social pressures, likely play a role too. We think both things can be true at once. The rise in distress among teenagers since the early 2010s is real and well documented. How much of it traces directly to screens specifically, rather than the many other things also changing in that same period, is still a genuinely open scientific question.
Is Digitalization Actually Making Us Less Sharp?
This is where the research gets genuinely surprising. For most of the twentieth century, average IQ test scores rose steadily generation after generation, a well documented pattern called the Flynn effect, generally credited to improvements in nutrition, education access, and general complexity of daily life. Since roughly the 1990s and 2000s, several countries have started to see that trend reverse.
A study of German student samples found figural reasoning scores dropping by roughly 4.7 to 5.2 IQ points per decade between 2012 and 2022. Separate research out of Northwestern University found ability scores falling in three of four major test categories between 2006 and 2018, describing a broader global decline that appears to have started in the 1990s and 2000s across multiple countries.
Here is the honest caveat researchers themselves keep repeating, and we want to repeat it too rather than let a scary headline stand alone. A drop in test scores does not automatically mean people are becoming less capable in some general sense. Some researchers describe the change as a shift in how different mental abilities relate to each other, rather than a simple universal decline in intelligence. That said, the researchers studying this openly point to a short list of likely contributing factors, including heavy screen use, outsourcing more thinking to search engines and AI tools, and disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic. Those are exactly the same forces already discussed in this article, showing up again from a completely different angle of research.
The Memory We Are Quietly Handing Over to Machines
There is a well known effect in memory research called the Google effect, sometimes called digital amnesia. A landmark study out of Columbia University found that when people believe information will remain easily searchable later, they are less likely to actually commit that information to memory. People in the study were more likely to remember where to find a fact online than to remember the fact itself.
This is not necessarily a tragedy on its own. Offloading information to a notebook, a library, or a search engine is something humans have done for a very long time. But broader research reviews on heavy digital reliance describe a consistent pattern where intensive, unregulated dependence on external digital tools is associated with weaker internal memory processes over time. Combined with a generation of AI tools that can now think through entire problems for us, not just store facts, the amount of mental work we are quietly handing off keeps growing, often without anyone deciding that on purpose.
The Attention Span Myth Worth Correcting
You have probably seen a statistic claiming the average human attention span has shrunk to some very specific, very short number of seconds, often attributed to a well known tech company’s internal research. We want to be direct about this one, because it is exactly the kind of claim Wolvra tries to slow down on rather than repeat. That specific statistic has circulated online for years in various different forms and numbers, and credible attempts to trace it back to an actual, verifiable study have repeatedly come up empty. Serious outlets covering this question, including CBS News and researchers writing for academic audiences, have openly questioned whether attention span can even be reliably measured as one single universal number in the first place, given how much it depends on the specific task, the person, and the moment.
What is better documented is behavior, not a single invented score. Some research has tracked people checking their phones over 200 times in a single day, in sessions lasting only a few seconds each, and has connected frequent task switching to higher stress and more errors in the work people are trying to do at the same time. That is a real, measurable pattern. The exact number of seconds your attention supposedly lasts is not something we are willing to hand you as fact, because it is not one.
So Is the System Actually a Scam?
Calling the entire structure of modern life a scam is a strong claim, and we think it is worth being precise about which part of that claim the evidence actually supports. The economic pressure is real and well documented. Debt loads tied to basic milestones like education and housing have grown faster than the wages meant to cover them, for a long enough period that it shows up clearly in national level data, not just in individual complaints. The mental and cognitive cost of constant connectivity is also real, showing up independently in youth mental health research, in memory research, and in the reversal of a century long trend in intelligence test scores. These are separate lines of evidence, from different researchers, pointing in a similar direction.
What the evidence does not support is the idea that this was built by any single group on purpose, or that individual people are powerless inside it. The loop is real. It is also not perfectly sealed. People do carve out time for culture, tradition, travel, and genuine creativity inside this same system, every single day, and the fact that it takes real effort to do that is exactly the point worth sitting with, rather than either denying the pressure exists or assuming nothing can be done about it.
What This Actually Means for You
We are not going to end this with a tidy five step plan to escape modern life, because that would be dishonest given everything above. What the research does suggest is worth taking seriously is smaller and more specific than that. Screen time and mental health outcomes move together closely enough, especially in teenagers, that limiting unstructured phone and social media use in that age group specifically has real evidence behind it, not just intuition. Deliberately choosing not to look something up immediately, even briefly, appears to genuinely help memory formation, based on the same research that identified the Google effect in the first place. And simply noticing how much of your week is already gone before anything resembling culture, adventure, or creation gets a turn is, on its own, useful information most people never actually sit down and calculate.
None of this fixes housing costs or wage growth on its own. But it is the part of the loop that is actually inside your own hands, and the research suggests it matters more than it might feel like in the moment.
