Long before anyone could read a layer of rock like a page in a history book, humans already knew something enormous had happened to the world before them. They found bones too big for any living animal. They told stories of floods that swallowed everything. They imagined ages of giants and monsters that came before ordinary people. They were not being foolish. They were doing the only thing available to them, turning evidence they could not yet explain into a story that made sense of it.

Science eventually caught up to those old stories and found something just as strange as any myth. Life on Earth really has nearly ended, more than once. Entire branches of the tree of life have been cut down to a stump and had to regrow from whatever survived. This guide walks through the myths people told before they had the tools to know better, the real science of what actually happened during Earth’s five confirmed mass extinctions, the logic and evidence scientists use to prove it, and an honest look at the most debated question in the field today. Are we currently living through a sixth one?

What Actually Counts as a Mass Extinction

Species go extinct constantly. That is normal background noise in the history of life, and it has been happening every single day for billions of years. A mass extinction is something different and much rarer. Scientists generally define one as a period where a large share of all species on Earth, commonly cited as seventy five percent or more, disappear within a relatively short window of geological time. Short here does not mean overnight. It can mean tens of thousands or even a few million years, which sounds long to a person but is a blink of an eye compared to the roughly four billion years life has existed on this planet.

By that definition, paleontologists recognize five confirmed mass extinctions in Earth’s past, often called the Big Five. Each one reshaped which kinds of life got to keep existing and which kinds vanished forever, and in that sense, every living thing alive today, including every human, is descended from whatever happened to survive these events.

The Myths Humans Told Before They Had the Facts

Before anyone understood plate tectonics, asteroid impacts, or the fossil record, people still had to explain the strange evidence sitting right in front of them. What they came up with tells you a lot about how the human mind handles the idea of the world nearly ending.

Giant Bones and the Myth of Monsters

Ancient peoples across the world regularly dug up the bones of enormous extinct animals, mammoths, mastodons, and giant reptiles among them, with no way to know these creatures were simply from a much older world. A common and very human response was to assume these bones belonged to giants, monsters, or heroes from a legendary past. Some historians and classicists have proposed that Greek stories of the Cyclops may have been partly shaped by fossil mammoth skulls, since the single large nasal opening in the center of a mammoth’s skull can look strikingly like one giant eye socket to someone who has never seen a living elephant. This is a theory, not a settled fact, but it is a genuinely useful example of how a real fossil can quietly become the seed of a legend.

A similar idea has been proposed for the griffin, the mythical creature with an eagle’s head and a lion’s body that shows up across ancient Greek and Central Asian art. Classical scholar Adrienne Mayor has argued that ancient traders traveling through parts of Central Asia rich in fossils of Protoceratops, a beaked, four legged dinosaur roughly the size of a large dog, may have brought stories of these strange skeletons back with them, stories that slowly transformed into the griffin legend. Again, this is a proposed connection rather than something that can be proven with certainty, and other researchers are skeptical of how directly the two are linked. Even so, it captures something true about how myths often begin. Real, confusing evidence comes first. The explanation comes later, and it is usually more imaginative than accurate.

In China, large fossil bones, including what we now know were dinosaur bones, were traditionally identified as the bones of dragons, a belief that shaped both folklore and, for a long time, traditional medicine practices that ground up these fossils. The bones were real. The explanation for what left them behind was not, but it was a coherent, culturally meaningful answer to a genuinely strange piece of physical evidence.

Flood Myths and the Memory of Real Catastrophe

Stories of a great flood that nearly wiped out humanity show up across an unusually wide range of unrelated cultures, from the flood in the Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh, to the flood of Noah in the Hebrew Bible, to flood myths recorded among cultures in the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific. Researchers have offered a range of explanations for why flood stories are so widespread. Some point to genuinely catastrophic local flooding events, such as the flooding of the Black Sea region or rapid sea level rise at the end of the last ice age, as plausible real events that later got remembered and retold as world ending disasters. Others argue that river valley civilizations everywhere simply experienced destructive floods often enough that the story pattern would emerge independently in many places without needing one shared origin. Either way, the pattern shows something important. Human cultures have a long, consistent habit of preserving the memory of real catastrophe by wrapping it in story.

Apocalypse Myths and the Need for an Ending

Beyond floods and monsters, many cultures also developed full mythologies about the end of the world itself, from Ragnarok in Norse mythology, where gods and giants destroy each other in a final battle, to various end times traditions in other religious systems. These stories are not really attempts to explain physical evidence the way fossil myths were. They are something else, an attempt to give the idea of total ending a shape and a meaning, rather than leaving it as a formless, unbearable thought. Mass extinctions, when science finally described them properly, turned out to be a real, physical version of exactly the kind of ending these old myths were reaching for. The difference is that the real ones already happened, more than once, and life kept going anyway.

The Big Five: What Actually Happened

Here is where myth ends and the evidence takes over. Each of these five events is documented through fossil records, chemical signatures in rock layers, and dating methods that let scientists pin down roughly when they happened and estimate how much of life on Earth they wiped out.

The Ordovician-Silurian Extinction, About 444 Million Years Ago

This was the first of the Big Five, and it struck a world that looked nothing like today’s, with life still concentrated almost entirely in the oceans. Estimates suggest somewhere around eighty five percent of species were lost. The leading explanations point to intense global cooling and glaciation, which would have dramatically lowered sea levels and disrupted the shallow marine ecosystems where most life was living at the time, possibly combined with changes in ocean oxygen levels. Because this event happened so long ago, the evidence is less detailed than for more recent extinctions, but the pattern in the fossil record is clear even if the exact trigger is still debated among researchers.

The Late Devonian Extinction, About 375 to 360 Million Years Ago

This extinction actually appears to have unfolded as a series of distinct pulses over a few million years rather than one single event, which makes it one of the trickier ones to describe simply. It hit marine life especially hard, including many reef building organisms, and estimates of total species loss run around seventy five percent. Proposed causes include changes in ocean oxygen levels, climate cooling, and possibly the spread of early land plants changing how nutrients washed into the oceans, which could have triggered algal blooms and oxygen poor dead zones in the water. This is a good example of how a mass extinction does not need an asteroid or a volcano to happen. Sometimes life itself, evolving in a new direction, can destabilize the systems around it enough to trigger a collapse elsewhere.

The Permian-Triassic Extinction, About 252 Million Years Ago, Known as the Great Dying

This is the single most severe mass extinction in Earth’s known history, with estimates suggesting as much as ninety to ninety six percent of all species were lost, including the overwhelming majority of ocean life. The leading explanation centers on a massive, prolonged episode of volcanic activity in what is now Siberia, known as the Siberian Traps, which released enormous volumes of greenhouse gases over a relatively short geological period. This appears to have driven severe global warming, ocean acidification, and widespread ocean oxygen loss, a combination brutal enough that recovering the same level of biodiversity is estimated to have taken several million years afterward. If any single event in Earth’s history deserves the word apocalyptic in a strictly scientific sense, this is it.

The Triassic-Jurassic Extinction, About 201 Million Years Ago

This event cleared out roughly seventy to seventy five percent of species and is generally linked to another massive episode of volcanic activity, this time associated with the breakup of the supercontinent Pangaea, which again pumped huge volumes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and disrupted the climate. What makes this extinction particularly interesting is what it cleared the way for. By removing many of the large competing reptile groups that had dominated up to that point, it opened an ecological opportunity that dinosaurs expanded into during the following Jurassic period. In other words, one of the most famous chapters in the history of life, the rise of the dinosaurs, was made possible by an earlier mass extinction clearing the field first.

The Cretaceous-Paleogene Extinction, About 66 Million Years Ago

This is the most famous mass extinction by far, the one that ended the age of the dinosaurs, and it took roughly seventy five percent of all species with it. Unlike most of the others, this one has a single, dramatic, and extremely well evidenced trigger. A massive asteroid, roughly ten kilometers across, struck what is now the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, creating the Chicxulub crater. The impact would have caused immediate devastation across a huge area, followed by a longer global catastrophe as dust and debris blocked sunlight, crashing plant growth and collapsing food chains from the bottom up. Non avian dinosaurs did not survive this event. Birds, which are technically a surviving lineage of dinosaurs themselves, along with small mammals, did.

The Logic and Evidence Behind These Discoveries

Knowing these events happened is one thing. Proving them is another, and the story of how scientists confirmed the asteroid impact behind the extinction of the dinosaurs is one of the best examples of real scientific detective work in modern history.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, physicist Luis Alvarez and geologist Walter Alvarez, along with colleagues, noticed something strange in a thin layer of clay found in rock formations from exactly the time period when the dinosaurs disappeared. That layer contained an unusually high concentration of iridium, an element that is extremely rare on Earth’s surface but far more common in asteroids and other space debris. Rather than assume this was a coincidence, they proposed a bold explanation. A large asteroid impact could scatter iridium rich dust across the entire planet, and that dust would settle into the geological record as a single, thin, chemically distinct layer, exactly like the one they had found.

The theory needed a crater to be fully convincing, and for years none had been found. That changed when geologists studying oil exploration data from the Yucatan Peninsula identified a massive, buried, roughly circular structure that matched the right size, location, and age. That structure became known as the Chicxulub crater, and once it was properly dated, it lined up almost perfectly with the iridium layer and the extinction event in the fossil record. This is how real scientific proof works for events this old. Not a single smoking gun, but multiple independent lines of evidence, chemistry, geology, and the fossil record, all pointing to the same conclusion from different directions.

Common Myths About Mass Extinctions, Busted

Myth: Mass Extinctions Happen Overnight

Even the asteroid driven extinction that ended the dinosaurs, often imagined as an instant apocalypse, unfolded over a longer period once you include the aftermath. The impact itself was sudden, but the collapse of global food chains from blocked sunlight and climate disruption played out over months to years, and full ecological recovery took much longer than that. Most of the other four mass extinctions unfolded over spans of tens of thousands to millions of years, driven by slower processes like sustained volcanic activity or gradual climate shifts rather than a single dramatic moment.

Myth: Dinosaurs Were Already a Failing, Doomed Group

There has been genuine scientific debate over whether dinosaur diversity was already declining before the asteroid impact, but this is far from a settled fact, and much of the fossil evidence suggests many dinosaur groups were still thriving right up until the impact. The more accurate way to put it is that the impact was catastrophic enough to end a group that had already successfully dominated the planet for well over one hundred million years, not that dinosaurs were somehow already failing on their own.

Myth: Mammals Only Thrived Because Dinosaurs Died

Mammals did not appear after the dinosaurs went extinct. They had already existed for over one hundred million years alongside dinosaurs, typically as small, mostly nocturnal animals that stayed out of the way of much larger reptiles. What the extinction of the dinosaurs actually did was remove the dominant large animals that had been keeping mammals confined to smaller ecological niches, opening space for mammals to evolve into larger body sizes and a much wider range of roles over the following millions of years. The extinction did not create mammals. It gave already existing mammals room to expand.

Are We Really in a Sixth Mass Extinction?

This is the question with the most disagreement attached to it, and we want to walk through it carefully rather than just picking the more dramatic sounding answer.

What is well supported by research is that current extinction rates, meaning how quickly species are being lost right now, are estimated to be dramatically higher than the natural background rate that has held steady across most of Earth’s history, with some estimates placing current rates at somewhere between one hundred and one thousand times the background level. Habitat destruction, climate change, overexploitation of species through hunting and fishing, pollution, and the spread of invasive species are all identified as major drivers behind this elevated rate, and unlike every one of the Big Five, every one of these drivers traces back to the activity of a single species. Us.

What is genuinely disputed is whether this elevated rate has, so far, actually reached the seventy five percent total species loss threshold that defines the Big Five historically. Current estimates of total species loss to date remain far below that threshold. This has led to real scientific disagreement. Some researchers argue that if current trends continue without meaningful change, a sixth mass extinction on the scale of the Big Five is a realistic and even likely outcome within the coming centuries, and that waiting for the seventy five percent threshold to actually be crossed before calling it a mass extinction misses the point of the warning entirely. Others argue that using the term mass extinction for a process that is still unfolding, rather than one that has already been measured and confirmed the way the Big Five have, risks overstating what has been proven so far. We think the honest, non dramatic answer is this. We are very likely in the early stages of a sixth mass extinction event, based on the rate of loss, but we have not yet reached the scale of loss that would let a future paleontologist confirm it the same confident way we confirm the asteroid impact of 66 million years ago. The uncertainty is itself the warning, not a reason to dismiss it.

What Would Actually Cause a Sixth Mass Extinction

Every one of the Big Five was driven by a physical process external to any living species making choices. Volcanic activity, glaciation, ocean chemistry shifts, an asteroid. None of those events involved a single species deciding how much habitat to clear, how much carbon to release, or how many fish to pull out of the ocean in a given year. A potential sixth mass extinction would be the first in Earth’s history driven primarily by the behavior of one species rather than a geological or astronomical event. That distinction matters, because it means a sixth mass extinction, unlike the previous five, is at least theoretically something that could be slowed or altered by choices, rather than something that simply has to run its course the way an asteroid impact does.

The New Myths We Tell Ourselves Now

It is worth noticing that we still tell ourselves stories about this, just newer ones. One common modern narrative insists nature will simply heal itself no matter what happens, treating the planet as endlessly self correcting regardless of human behavior. Another insists a future technology will arrive in time to fix whatever damage has been done, without needing to change how anything is done today. Both of these are, in their own way, doing the same job the flood myths and monster legends once did. Turning something too large and frightening to fully sit with into a story with a comfortable ending. The real difference now is that, for the first time, we actually have the tools to check these stories against the evidence rather than just repeating them, and the evidence does not clearly support either comfortable version.

What History’s Mass Extinctions Actually Teach Us

Two things stand out clearly across all five confirmed events. Life has always found a way to continue, even after losing the overwhelming majority of species alive at the time. And recovery has never been quick. Estimates for full biodiversity recovery after the worst of the Big Five run into the millions of years, meaning any species alive at the start of a mass extinction has no realistic chance of personally seeing the recovery on the other side of it. Those two facts sit together uncomfortably, and that discomfort seems like the right note to end on, rather than false comfort in either direction. Life, in some form, almost certainly continues no matter what happens next. That is not remotely the same as saying it will continue in a form anyone currently alive would recognize, or on a timeline that matters to anyone currently alive.
